Different Types of Screenings for Covid-19

There are two main types of l tests:

  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
  • Antigen test

Polymerase Chain Reaction-PCR

Polymerase chain reaction or most commonly recognized as PCR is a molecular-based test. These types of tests are most often performed in a laboratory for diagnosis of COVID-19.

PCR test examines your upper respiratory specimen and directly screens for the presence of genetic material, Ribonucleic acid, or RNA viral of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. With the help of this test, the virus is detectable in the body before antibodies form or symptoms of the disease appear. These types of tests are able to diagnose early illnesses.

With a PCR swab test, your results should be available in approximately 3-7 days.

Antigen Test

Did you get nasal swabbed by a nurse? Yes, that’s the way for your COVID-19 antigen test!

Immunoassays that detect the presence of a specific viral antigen, indicating current viral infection in a body, are called Antigen Tests.

In this method, a sample or specimen is taken by swabbing inside your nose, nasopharyngeal, or saliva. These are rapid tests that produce results in 15-30 minutes and have been commonly used in the diagnosis of other respiratory pathogens, too, like influenza and RSV.

If a rapid COVID-19 test was requested by you, results could be produced in approximately 15 minutes.

NOTE: At Southwest Urgent Care, All the tests are performed following FDA’s testing requirements. In specific circumstances, one test type may be recommended over the other. Result timing will depend on the type of test you’ve received.
